LAME MP3 link From the Free-Codecs.com website. Despite its name, LAME is perhaps the best free MP3 encoder available. Download and open the zip file to extract the lame_enc.dll file (PKZIP or WinZip may be needed to extract the file if you are not using Windows ME or XP/Vista). Copy the lame_enc.dll file into the folder where GoldWave is installed (usually C:\Program Files\GoldWave) or copy it into the C:\Windows\System (or equivalent) folder.

Migrating from v4 to v5 Notes

Many changes have been made to this version of GoldWave. Almost all of the functionality of v4 is included in v5, but with some changes. Please be prepared to spend some time relearning parts of the program. If GoldWave is critical for your work, you may want to install v5 in a different program folder so you can still use the previous version while adjusting to the new version.

Some of the differences include:

  • The selection method is different and now uses a context menu. See the help for details. Use Options | Window to select the old style selection method.
  • The tool bar buttons are different, but more configurable. Use Options | Tool Bar.
  • Volume levels are given in decibels (dB) instead of percent. The manual includes a section in the Appendix about volume scales.
  • Effects | Silence is now Edit | Mute.
  • The average (rms) level under the Volume | Maximize is now under Volume | Match Volume.
  • Effects | Filter | Noise gate is now a preset under Effects | Compressor/Expander.
  • View | User is now View | Preset.
  • View | Zoom 1:X commands were replaced by time based zoom commands.
  • Cpy2 tool bar button is now To.
  • Cue Points and Evaluator tool buttons are now in the upper tool bar.
  • The Windows clipboard is not used at all. An internal, virtual clipboard is used instead, making editing significantly faster and more stable.
  • The Flash Open feature is now seamlessly integrated and is no longer mentioned.
  • The User Defined Filter is not included.
  • Visuals update at 60 frames per second. On slow systems, set visuals to Blank to improve performance. Lowering the frame rate may help as well (press F11, Visual tab).

Known Issues and Solutions

Although every effort has been made to ensure GoldWave runs properly, some combinations of sound/video drivers, plug-ins, and hardware are unstable. If you experience any problems, make sure you have the latest sound and video drivers installed or try changing the settings as given below.
  1. Emulated DirectX drivers may cause stuttered playback. Use a higher latency setting in GoldWave (press F11, Device tab).
  2. Some DirectX Audio Plug-ins cause a deadlock/freeze when previewing. Use the "Alternative playback initialization" option in GoldWave (press F11, Device tab).
  3. Files are limited to 4GB on FAT32 partitions. Use NTFS with Windows XP/2000 to create larger files.
  4. Some DirectX plug-ins report missing DLLs or errors. These are caused by installation problems or errors in the plug-ins themselves. Please contact the plug-in developer for technical assistance.
  5. Some systems experience mouse movement slowdowns caused by problems with mouse and/or video drivers. Update mouse and video drivers. If you use a Logitech mouse, turn off the Enable game detection setting under Start | Settings | Control Panel | Mouse (or Logitech MouseWare program). Or use Start | Programs | GoldWave | GoldWave Setup to disable OpenGL in GoldWave.
  6. The Control window disappears on some systems. Update video drivers or manually close the Control window to dock it (or use the Tool | Control command).
  7. Resaving certain WMA files will report a format error. You must manually reselect the desired attributes for such files.
  8. If you are unable to get GoldWave to run, try using the Start | Programs | GoldWave | GoldWave Setup command and disable all the enhanced functionality.
